Saints win 5-4 on penalties after extra time

Buildbase FA Trophy Extra Preliminary Round Replay  (Tuesday 2 October)

A high quality penalty shootout , in which just one kick was missed, saw Saints edge out their neighbours in an enthralling FA Trphy replay on Tuesday.

Is Saints has the rub of the green in the weekend game, it was Uxbridge who felt hard done by, especially after a second half when they held sway but were unable to find a way past a determined Saints defence.

Shorn by injury of their entire attacking options, Saints were compelled to play without a recognisable front line but had the tireless Adam Morris to create havoc whenever possible in an advanced midfield role. Inevitably, Uxbridge were able to push forward more often but rarely looked like breaking through. Mark Goodman, already looking good for the end of season awards, had a sensational evening in the left back berth. Nothing got past him and he was always looking to push forward. Combining well with Charlie Mitchell, Saints just needed a strong touch in the final third to impose their own pressures.

Chances were few and far between in a balanced first half but Uxbridge stepped up the pressure and Saints cleared off the line several times as the visitors lay seige to the home goal.

Both sides looked to avoid extra time and Saints began to ask questions of the Uxbridge defence. A crossfield ball from Keaton August to Adam Morris turned into a one-two as the youngster arrived at pace into the area to volley the Morris cross into the grateful arms of McCarthy. A definite contender for 'almost goal of the season'.

Moving into extra time Blue Gallagher might have done better with an effort but, wth the clock ticking down, some astute substitutions from Danny Edwards, introducing Adam Kirby and Ryan Phillips, set up the penalty team and so it proved. Both sides' penalty takers were immaculate with neither keeper getting a touch. Uxbridge's fifth kick hit the post and Charlie Mitchell stepped up to ensure a home tie against Maldon & Tiptree in the next round on 13 October.

Saints: Carl Dennison, Alex Nolan, Jack Mullan, Alan Hedley (Adam Kirby 105), Luke Appleton, Charlie Mitchell, Frankie Jones (Ryan Phillips 120), Adam Morris, Jordan Berry (Blue Gallagher 82), Junior Mubiayi (Keaton August 73).

Saints join exciting new youth academy

SLFAsmChalfont St Peter AFC are delighted to announce that they have joined the Southern League Football Academy (SLFA) - the brand new education and football academy of the Evo-Stik League South.

The club joined the programme when in the Evo-Stik League South last season before their transfer to the Bostik League but will remain as part of the new set up.

An Education and Football Academy side for 16-18 year olds will be created at Chalfont St Peter AFC and will play in the SLFA with opportunities to play in the FA Youth Cup from September 2019.

The SLFA is the sister programme of the impressive NPL Football Academy (NPLFA) for Step Three divisions – The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League – and we are now on the lookout for talented and committed young footballers who are eager to take their first steps to a career in the semi-professional game and more importantly study to earn educational qualifications.

The Chalfont St Peter Academy is a full-time course which is an alternative to college where students will study for a BTEC in Sport at Level 2 or Level 3 (Diploma and Extended Diploma available which is the equivalent to two/three A Levels) which will be delivered by a tutor in the mornings before a UEFA qualified football coach will train the students in the afternoons as well as manage the side on Wednesday afternoons against fellow SLFA sides such as Frome Town, Chesham United and Swindon Supermarine. All games will take place at the main grounds of all the Evo-Stik South clubs involved and filmed for analysis with the weekly highlights show that is published every Friday evening.

Its sister programme – the NPLFA - has been a huge success on and off the pitch with over 750 students enrolling over the past four years and many of those progressing onto university, scholarships in the US, the programme’s own sports degree course or employment and as of October 2018, fifty students have progressed to their respective first teams with two students progressing to the professional game and that success will now be implemented in the South.

By being a part of Chalfont St Peter AFC, there are genuine pathways to play for the first team and with the football programme being held between Monday and Friday, students will still be able to play for their local junior sides at the weekend.

Chairman Denis Mair commented We are delighted to have been invited to take part in the 'Southern League Football Academy' commencing 2019. Having read the literature and spoken to the people associated with the academy, it's our belief that this scheme will sit perfectly within the structure of our club and help grow the club’s profile within our community.

“For the first time in our club’s history we will be able to offer local football players a package that will give them direction and a support network, concluding with a 'BTEC' qualification.

“From our club’s perspective we will have the opportunity to discover and work with new young local talent. Being able to offer them an opportunity into senior first team football is something that Chalfont St Peter AFC prides itself on. At Chalfont we are fortunate to have a first team manager who has built a reputation based on giving young players a pathway into senior football and is delighted that our club’s involvement with the Southern League Football Academy will allow us to further develop this ethos.

“We are confident that this venture will prove to be totally beneficial to all parties and look forward to it's commencement.”

There is a maximum of twenty-two places available for the Chalfont St Peter AFC Academy with trials to be arranged in October 2018, December 2018, February 2019, April 2019 and May 2019.

The first trial will take place on THURSDAY 25TH OCTOBER, from 2PM – 4PM at CHALFONT ST PETER AFC, MILL MEADOW, GRAVEL HILL, CHALFONT ST PETER, SL9 9QX.

Trialists will need to bring full training kit (your own), shin pads, boots suitable for grass surface, trainers for the gym and a drink.

Saints holding out for a hero

Buildbase FA Trophy Extra Preliminary Round  (Saturday 29 September)

The need for a goalscoring hero to get them over the line in tight games is fast becoming a pressing need for Saints. After a dire first half against their neighbours from Uxbridge, Saints mixed things up in the second hald and dominated play to have the opportunity to win this FA Trophy tie at a canter. It takes a particular to player to convert midfield dominance into goals and that remains the missing link at Mill Meadow.

A lack of pace down the left and a narrow setup in midfield meant that Saints struggled to get their game going in the first half and the Uxbridge goal was rarely under threat. Some neat interplay promised better things but it was the lack of pace that caught them out as Matt Sinclair found plenty of space for a run on goal and his cross was met perfectly by a Kevin Warner header.

Changes during the interval were inevitable and Saints immediatley looked the better for it. With space to breathe, Charlie Mitchell, despite some excellent attention from Cory Watson, looked a real threat, and Junior Mubiayi was strong and positive but needed to see more of the ball than he did. Adam Morris began to find his range from set pieces and Saints always looked the more likely to score. It finally came on the hour as Junior Mubiayi cut in to lob a cross over the advancing keeper from a difficult angle.

With Saints growing in confidence, they looked the most likely to steal the result but their struggles in front of goal continued and Uxbridge hit the bar with a well struck shot from range and, but for an outstanding clearance from Alan Hedley would have won the game in the dying minutes.

The sides meet in the replay on Tuesday when Saints will be looking to reproduce their second half performance over the full 90 minutes.
