Lacklustre Saints struggle against Fleet

Evo-Stik League South East  (Tuesday 9 January)

The opportunity to bounce back from the weekend defeat against lowly was sadly spurned as Saints laboured to secure a point against a lively Fleet side that left Mill Meadow with more than they probably expected.

If Saints' struggles in front of goal have re-emerged since New Year, it is as well that the defence continues to excel. Carl Dennison was certainly the busier of the two keepers and had to be at his sharpest as there were signs of the ship creaking during periods when Saints struggled to get out of their own half.

Evo-Stik League South East  (Saturday 2 December)

A rejuvenated Saints roared back from their midweek disappointments to record a comprehensive demolition of their visitors from Marlow.

Beset by a combination of injury, absence and loan recalls, Danny Edwards was forced to shuffle his pack and made six changes to his side. The return of Jake Cass couldn't have come at a better time and he was immediately a threat to Marlow and was always central to the action as Saints started strongly. Attacking with width and pace it was no surprise they made early inroads and a flighted ball from Max Holland on the left to the far post was met by the late arriving Alex Paine and his header put Saints in front. Paine was revelling in his more advanced role and his strength and persistence was a boon to Saints' attacking options.

Within ten minutes, the lead was doubled as Victor Osobu, enjoying a lot of success down the right, was picked out by Frankie Jones, himself impressing in his first start in central midfield, and cut inside to curl his shot over the keeper and in off the underside of the bar.

Marlow tried to get into the game but their efforts met firm resistance from the home defence and Michael Power-Simpson, deputising for the injured Carl Dennison, had a relatively trouble free game as Aaron Jewell and Alan Hedley successfully blunting any threat.

Jake Cass, eager to get back among the goals, had a fierce shot pushed over the bar as Saints ended the half strongly.

The second half saw Saints continue in the ascendency although Power-Simpson was called on to make a fingertip save to keep his goal intact on the hour. A double substitution by the visitors changed the tone of the game, with Jordan Brown, more than capable of starting an argument in an empty room, taking only minutes to find his way into the referees book.

If Saints thought they had a third when a powerful Cass header from an Osobu corner was hacked off the line to loud claims of the ball having crossed the line, they got it minutes later after a delightful move down the right. Osobu played the ball into the overlapping Mark Goodman and his pinpoint cross found Jake Cass in the area. The first header hit the post but Cass was quickly on to the rebound to force the ball home.

Saints safely saw out the game to secure the win to keep them on the fringes of the playoffs and in a good position for their next game, a visit to Hayes & Yeading Utd who are just a point above Saints in the table.

Saints:  Michael Power-Simpson, Mark Goodman, Ryan Haugh, Aaron Jewell, Alan Hedley, Jack Mullan, Max Holland (Rob Hastings 78), Frankie Jones, Jake Cass (Albie Sheehan-Cozens 87), Alex Paine, Victor Osobu (Alex Lafleur 84).

Attendance.  62     Star Player.  Aaron Jewell
