Saints 5  Hillingdon Borough 1 (Spartan Premier Division)

Local rivals Boro were sent packing after being overwhelmed by a powerful Saints display on Saturday. A powerful header by John Carroll rising above the pack to meet a Ben Stack free kick put Saints in front on the half hour and minutes later a delicious volley by Charlie Strutton from an Adam Louth pass increased the lead. Mark Oliver was in dominant form between the sticks for Saints as Boro tried to force a way back. Aaron Lansicott pulled a goal back with a breakaway goal, somehow springing the Saints offiside trap. But just before the break it was Saints again, with Adam Louth bundling home a Stack corner with a good header.

It was Louth again on the scoresheet on the hour with a fine shot after Alan Hedley had been fouled. This knocked much of the stuffing out of Boro but Saints couldn't extend their lead until stoppage time when substitutes Barry Brosnan and Jude Eboji combined brilliantly with the former volleying home after a great run and cross by the latter.

With both rivals Tring Athletic and Aylesbury dropping points, Saints strengthened their position at the top of the table. The latest table can be seen on the Team News page.

Saints 3  Dunstable Town 0 (Spartan Premier Division)

Tuesday 2 March 2010

Saints got back to their winning ways with a comfortable win on Tuesday.

Within 10 minutes they took the lead as Daniel Hughes volleyed in a lob pass from Ben Stack. Dunstable tried to get into the game but it was a night when Saints were strong in all positions and it was only a series of heavy first touches that stopped them from overrunning their visitors.

A single goal lead has become unusual in recent weeks but that was doubled on the hour when Lee Togwell found himself in the right position to sweep home a Stack cross from close range. That lead was extended further when Alan Hedley forced a penalty with a typically powerful run into the box. Skipper John Carroll calmly netted the spot kick.

A full debut by Alex Roe-Brown was most impressive as he filled the front line with Charlie Strutton, and his speed certainly caused problems and doubtless as his experience grows, he will be a formidable asset to the club.

A note of thanks to the officials, who with their firm control over dissent made for a very enjoyable evening.

Oxhey Jets 3  Saints 1 (Spartan Premier League)

Saints' long unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on a wet Saturday as bogey side Oxhey Jets came away with a surprise victory.

For long periods there was only one side looking for the win. Saints created chances and dominated play as they they usually do in an exciting first half but only had an own goal as reward when Ian Bywater turned an Adam Louth cross into his own net after half an hour. Oxhey nicked an equaliser just before the break when Lee Armitt scored with an outrageous shot from a very shall angle.

In a one-sided second half, the hosts were happy to get 10 men behind the ball and frustrate Saints as they sought to take control of the scoreline. Shots were cleared off the line and the bar was hit as Saints pressed for the lead. However, on the hour, Chris Killer lived up to his name by scoring into the top corner with a delightful shot to put the Jets in front.  After a particularly heavy downpour and increasing, but ultimately toothless, pressure by Saints it was the hosts who surprised even themselves by scoring a third with a breakaway goal by Wayne Gladdy.

Saints face 3 homes games in eight days, starting on Tuesday when they entertain Dunstable Town.

as Saints came out after the break and promptly scored a fourth.
Brimsdown pulled one back but substitute Jude Eboji scored the fifth to keep
Chalfont two points ahead of Tring Athletic in the league table.

Things slowly came to a standstill late in the half as both teams were
flagging.

Saints stumble at Aylesbury PDF Print E-mail

Aylesbury 3  Saints 3 (Spartan Premier Division)

It might have been altitude sickness from being table toppers for a second week, but Saints threw away their chance of extending their lead at the top when they allowed Aylesbury to come back and steal a draw in Tuesday night's clash of the titans at Aylesbury.

On the back of 9 successive wins, Saints were favourites against an Aylesbury side that had stumbled themselves in recent games after a run at the top.

Within 15 minutes Saints took the lead through Danny Hughes but conceded almost immediately when Lewis Cumber conceded a penalty that Grant Carney converted. Saints went straight back up the field and a typically strong run by Charlie Strutton saw the in-form striker net for the 7th straight game and restore the lead.

Saints were well in control and with Gareth Paxton back in partnership with John Carroll in defence, the Ducks offered little threat and it was no surprise when Strutton scored again just before the break to extend the lead to 3-1.

For a game between the two meanest defences in the league the game wasn't going the way that was expected, but Aylesbury tightened up after the break and Saints, so dominant in the first half, never really looked like adding to their score. Kevin Mealor pulled a goal back for the hosts on the hour with a powerful header from a corner that should have been dealt with much better by Saints and a difficult half was compounded when another penalty was conceded, and converted again by Carney for the equaliser.

Saints were now on the back foot, as they had been on Saturday, and after such a dominant first half, were more than pleased to hear the final whistle.

Kingsbury London Tigers 2 - Saints 3 (Spartan Premier Division)

Kingsbury London Tigers provided a stern test to Saints' title aspirations on Saturday but could not prevent Danny Edwards' side notching up their ninth straight win as goals from Adam Louth, Danny Hughes and Charlie Strutton secured the points for the league leaders.

Saints made an untidy start to the afternoon but a golden spell of play, inspired by Louth on the left flank saw Louth himself open the scoring after half an hour. Tigers quickly equalised after some hesitation at the back but a superb cross from Louth saw a close range interplay between Stack and Hughes which allowed the latter restore the Saints lead. A close range header by Strutton extended the lead. Barry Brosnan deserved some reward for his hard work but turned down one excellent chance and another effort was cleared off the line. Saints went into the break looking comfortable for their 3-1 lead.

The second half was such a disappointment as the balance of play swung to the home side and doubts started to creep into Saints play. Eventually the price was paid and Tigers scored a second goal, the first time Saints have conceded two goals since mid-November. Saints held on during this rocky period and by the end of the game were comfortably holding on to their lead.

Fellow title-challengers Aylesbury and Colney Heath both suffered surprise 1-4 defeats on Saturday to drop back slightly. Tring Athletic enjoyed a convincing 6-0 defeat over a porous Langford team who have leaked more goals than any other side, to maintain second position.

The latest league table can be found under Team News.

Saints travel to fellow title-challengers Aylesbury on Tuesday.
