Saints 1  Broxbourne Borough 2  (Spartan Premier Division)

Saints' dreams of Spartan League title glory were laid to rest on Saturday by a Broxbourne side playing at their stubborn best, in front of a keeper in outstanding form. Defeat in this game, coupled with a win for Aylesbury, would settle the title in favour of Aylesbury. And so it proved.

Nerves, red raw at the importance of the game, betrayed Saints in the early stages of play. They struggled to impose themselves and it was clear that Broxbourne were in no mood to roll over.

A well-struck shot from Ben Andreos gave the visitors a half time lead. This despite Saints somehow failing to convert even one of the many chances they had created. Obe Murefu was working miracles between the sticks.

Saints got themselves together after the break and Daniel Hughes levelled the scores when he bullied his way through the defence to fire home powerfully.

The renewed optimsim didn't last long as the Saints offside trap failed and allowed Fred Dooling in to restore the lead for the visitors.

As Saints became more desperate to get back into the game so the chances came thicker and faster but all fell short.

Before the game started, Alan Hedley was presented with the Supporters Player of the Year Award for another superb, consistent season.

Team:  Power-Simpson, Togwell, Louth, Walsh, Carroll, Hedley, Ajayi (D Williams), Hughes, Strutton, Brosnan (Sears), Stack (Brook-Smith).

Leverstock Green 1  Saints 3  (Spartan Premier Division)

Mr Goals, Charlie Strutton, struck a priceless double on Saturday to celebrate his birthday and keep Saints' challenge for the title alive.

In glorious sunshine, Strutton inevitably opened the scoring after 19 minutes with a typically powerful, determined run across the box and strong shot.

Unlike recent opponents, Leverstock looked to play football and Saints could never relax and, despite spurning several chances, were happy to get to the break still in the lead.

A poor start after the break last week, was matched by an equally good re-start this week with Adamson Ajayi wriggling free on the right after just two minutes and crossing for Ben Stack to score from close range.

The officials then had a period in which all spectators were left scratching their heads at a series of inexplicable decisions. A handful of bookings was made in a game that was always played in the right spirit.

After hitting the bar with a rattling good shot on 77 minutes, Saints conceded possession and Leverstock broke quickly and veteran ex-Saint and substitute Roy Gumbs pulled a goal back with a terrific shot. Any hopes of a comeback were quickly bashed as Saints went straight back up the field and Stack picked out Charlie Strutton with a pinpoint cross and the striker hit goal number 30 of the season with a powerful header.

Team:  Bernstein, Togwell, Louth, Walsh, Carroll, Hedley, Ajayi, Hughes (Brook-Smith), Strutton, Brosnan (L Williams), Stack (D Williams)

Saints 1  Colney Heath 1 (Spartan Premier Division)

A breathtaking goal by Alan Hedley with the very last kick of the game rescued a point for Saints on Saturday against a stubborn Colney side who had arrived with a game plan to defend and spoil. As a result, their league leading scorer, Ian Cooper, was invisible for most of the game, managing just one shot all afternoon.

Saints have been coming up against this tactic for several weeks now but hardly help themselves with their own game plan centring around pumping the ball forward with height. This was meat and drink to the tall, powerful Colney defence.

After a goalless first half, Saints opened the second half in the worst possible way. They conceded a free kick on the edge of the area and what seemed a scuffed shot by Dowling evaded the wall and deceived Bernstein, slipping through his legs and over the line.

Colney could hardly believe their good fortune and re-set their stall to frustrate Saints title challenge. League leaders in the early stages of the season, Colney had let things slip in recent weeks and were in no mood to make things easy.

Saints tactics didn't change and despite some late substitutions, looked incapable of getting back into the game. With the clock running down fast one more cross swung across from left to right, picking out Alan Hedley wide on the edge of the area and the midfielder smashed a perfect volley over the keeper into the far top corner for an unbelievable equaliser.

Elsewhere, Aylesbury matched Saints midweek efforts and put 6 goals past hapless Hillingdon Borough to snatch the advantage back from Saints.

Team:  Bernstein, Togwell, Louth, Walsh, Carroll, Hedley, Ajayi (Brook-Smith), Hughes, Strutton, Brosnan (L Williams), Stack (Sears).

Hillingdon Borough 0 Saints 6  (Spartan Premier Division)

It was one-way traffic on a lovely Spring evening as Saints crushed their opponents with some delightful yet efficient football. It took just 15 minutes for the first goal to arrive with Ben Stack curling a delightful chip over the keeper from the edge of the area. Within a minute Barry Brosnan bundled home a second and Saints were comfortably in charge. Yet it took another 20 minutes before Charlie Strutton broke free to slide the ball under the helpless keeper for number three.

Borough continued to defend manfully after the break but with Alan Hedley bossing the midfield and Lee Togwell and Adam Louth pushing forward dangerously it always seemed just a matter of time before further goals came. Adamson Ajayi, getting a rare start was a constant threat on the right flank with his blistering speed.

Number four came after 75 minutes as Ray Walsh popped up to score from close range. With substitutions made, Lucas Williams picked his way through the bodies for the fifth and Borough collapsed completely in stoppage time to allow Adam Louth to complete the scoring.

Team:  Bernstein, Togwell, Louth, Walsh, Carroll, Hedley, Ajayi, Hughes (Payne), Strutton (Roe-Brown), Brosnan (L Williams), Stack

Saints 4  St Margaretsbury 2 (Spartan Premier Division)

Saints were given the run-around for long periods on Saturday but their class eventually shone through as they came back in the last 15 minutes to snatch a thrilling win that keeps them in the hunt for the league title.

A poor start, allowing the visitors to set the pace, was punished when Draper took advantage of a defensive slip to score past Elliott Bernstein, making his debut between the posts in place of the injured Mark Oliver.

Saints reached the break still wondering how they were going to get back in the game, but 7 minutes after the restart Daniel Hughes bundled the ball home for the equaliser. 10 minutes later they were again behind as Draper scored his second, this time from the spot as Saints conceded a penalty.

Tension was growing around the ground, wondering how Saints were going to pull things around. Then they won a free kick and Ben Stack whipped the ball in for Charlie Strutton to score with a beautifully taken header. Saints slowly began to impose themselves and finally took the lead on 85 minutes as Strutton did what he does best, latching on to a through ball and running powerfully through to slide the ball past the keeper for his second goal.

By the time Hughes netted his second goal minutes from the end, the relief was tangible, and the result was much deserved.

Elsewhere, Aylesbury made it an astonishing 19 goals in 3 days as they crushed Biggleswade Utd 10-0 to maintain their challenge to Saints' nine week run at the top of the table.

Team:  Bernstein, Togwell, Cumber (Ajayi), Walsh, Carroll, Hedley, Stack (Payne), Hughes, Strutton, Brosnan (Brook-Smith), Louth.

Welwyn Garden City 2  Saints 9 (Spartan Premier Division)

On a wet night Saints took advantage of postponements elsewhere to stretch their lead at the top of the table to five points. They thumped bottom club Welwyn and in so doing passed the 100 league goals mark.

The win was all the more remarkable as, with goalkeeper Mark Oliver limping off after only 7 minutes and with no replacement on the bench, Saints played out the rest of the game with John Carroll between the posts.

Led by a hat trick from Barry Brosnan, the other goals came from Remmell Clarke, Daniel Hughes (2), Charlie Strutton (2) and Ray Walsh.

Team: Oliver (Payne), Yala, Louth, Walsh, Carroll, Hedley, L Williams (Roe-Brown), Hughes, Strutton (Clarke), Brosnan, Stack.
